Looking from the southwest, the rail trail approaches the intersection of: South Street Extension (left foreground where gray car is entering picture); Broad Street (from left to right where dark van is traveling); and Vila do Porto Boulevard (background, gray car is turning into it). The trail continues at the diagonally-opposite corner of the intersection where indicated by the red arrow. The intersection has seven entrances/exits, counting the trail and a driveway which is between the crosswalk and Broad Street at the northwest corner. Trail users are expected to wait for signals to change in two legs of the intersection to continue on the trail. Low compliance, disorder and crashes can be expected here. It would have been better to offer a route for bicyclists bringing them out onto Broad Street West of this location and leading through the intersection on the road continuing on Vila do Porto Boulevard (see next few pictures). Novice and child bicyclists might be patient enough to use the crosswalks, but many bicyclists will not be, and will either take to the street -- from an inconvenient starting location -- or cut diagonally across the intersection. You may view a design drawing of this intersection from the arrt.org Web site.
